Morgan Wallen was nominated for three awards at the 57th Annual CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year alongside Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, Carrie Underwood and Lainey Wilson.
Of course Morgan has had one of the biggest tours in country music the past couple years, and recently announced his 2024 One Night At A Time stadium tour (where he’ll be playing two nights on each stop).
Morgan was banned from the CMA Awards back in 2021 after a video was released showing the country star using a racial slur, though he was still eligible in certain categories that weren’t solely for the artist.
But last year, he was welcomed back and nominated for both Entertainer of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.
This year, Morgan was again nominated for both Male Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year, and also Album of the Year for his most recent project, One Thing At a Time. And he also performed twice, once during a surprise appearance by Eric Church for their duet “Man Made a Bar,” and again with Post Malone and HARDY for a tribute to Joe Diffie with “Pickup Man” and “John Deere Green,” the first two singles from the just-announced Hixtape Vol. 3: Difftape.
But once again, Morgan Wallen walked away from the CMA Awards empty handed after Lainey Wilson took home the night’s top prize for Entertainer of the Year, while Chris Stapleton won Male Vocalist of the Year and Lainey Wilson also won Album of the Year for Bell Bottom Country.
And Morgan’s fans weren’t happy with their guy being left out of the winner’s circle:
No disrespect to Lainey Wilson she’s good but come on your telling me she beat out @lukecombs@MorganWallen for entertainer of the year? Who’s making the decisions over there Joe Biden? Are these people who tabulated the votes tonight also take care of general elections?
@morganWallen was robbed tonight of that Entertainer of the Year Award!! Sold out numerous stadiums, ballparks and arenas plus had the BEST album of the year hands down. Numerous weeks at the number one spot #CMAawards should be ashamed!!
Once again, the @CountryMusic and their voters snub @MorganWallen when he is OBVIOUSLY the best, most successful artist of any current genre of music. They weren’t afraid to use him and his buddies performances to bolster their show ratings though. #CMA#CMAAwards2023
I’ll be honest, I thought Entertainer of the Year was going to be between Morgan and Luke Combs. Both have multiple #1 hits this year, and have sold out stadiums on their current tours. There’s no denying that Lainey Wilson is a superstar, but she’s also opening up for another one of the nominees…
Either way, it’s hard to be upset about Lainey winning – but Morgan Wallen fans are definitely not happy.
The 6,200 industry professionals who determine the #CMAawards winners are all delusional or in denial. @MorganWallen is undeniably the EOTY & album of the year, at the least. The grudge the #CMAs are holding against him is almost embarrassing at this point.
