Charley Crockett Puts A Western Twist On “I’m Just A Clown” For New ‘Billy Horton Sessions’ Version

Charley Crockett country music

Charley Crockett is back.

Last September, Crockett dropped one of my favorite albums of 2022, The Man from Waco.

And of all the songs on the project, “I’m Just A Clown” quickly became a favorite of mine, as you can almost feel yourself inside a smoky bar in the early 1970s.

Crockett himself spoke about the song:

“Listening back to Waco, I’d had an idea to do a part two in the style of Marty Robbins’ ‘Gunfighter Ballads’ or the Johnny Cash ‘Ballads Of The True West.’ I guess I’ve always been turning in these western folk ballads from the very start.

I’ve always been a folk songwriter, and if your tune really holds up you oughta be able to present it with any kind of band or arrangement and have the story show through.

On ‘I’m Just A Clown,’ it started out as a three chord barroom Honky Tonk number and then I went soul on it. Here we went and flipped it all around again using the same darker chords but in more of a late ‘60s folk color.”

With that being said, Crockett has officially released the Billy Horton Sessions version of the song, and a video to go along with it.

For this version of the song, he decided to go with more of a western swing sound, instead of the soul version we originally heard on the album.

Needless to say, it’s a unique twist to the song, and further proves the versatility that Crockett brings to the table.
