Although we all know and love Kevin Costner as an A-list actor, he’s also a very talented musician.

Kevin is the frontman for Kevin Costner & Modern West, a country rock band he started in 2007, and he even co-writes a decent amount of their music.

And more recently, he helped pen a tune for H. Jack Williams’ 2021 Halfway to Hell album, which they wrote alongside Adam Box, who is the drummer for Brothers Osborne (and also plays on the song).

In a recent post on Twitter, Kevin shared a little bit about the inspiration behind the song, saying it’s centered on the concept of how we all mess up in life, and all we can hope for is that we get “one more day” to try again and get it right:

“Here’s a song I co-wrote with my friend @jacksong50 and the very talented @Drummeradambox of the @brothersosborne. We’re all trying to live our lives the best we can. Sometimes we fall short, but the heart of life is that we keep on trying.

When it comes to the end and we meet our maker, the question I would ask is ‘Could you just give my good friend one more day?’ The greatest gift you could ever give a friend would be just a little more time to try and do the best they can.

For themselves and for the people they love. That was what I was feeling when we wrote ‘One More Day.’ The song features @jacksong50 on vocals, @Drummeradambox on drums, Jim Moose Brown on Keys and The Legendary Gary Rossington (@Skynyrd) on guitar. I hope you enjoy!”

In an interview with Songwriting a little while back, H. Jack explained how it came to be in terms of the tweaks Kevin made and how he wanted to shape the bridge specifically:

“I send everything I write to Kevin. He’s in the film business and, if he likes something, you never know where it might go. Plus, he’s got his own band and he likes my songwriting.

So then it came back and he went, ‘Man, I think this is the best thing you’ve ever done. And I think that I think I can hear a few changes I’d like to put it in.’

And we did. He wanted the bridge to be about honor. He said, ‘Well, the key ingredient you’re missing here, I think in my book, is everything you do, you do with honor.

Even if you fail, you fail with honor. You go down hard but at least you have honorable intentions. We need to put that in.’ So we put that in and that’s how that works.”

The song also features legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington, as well as Jim “Moose” Brown, longtime guitarist in Bob Seger’s Silver Bullet Band.

Not a band lineup at all, eh? Talk about some musical giants…
