Some call her tacky, I call her iconic… Miss Dolly Parton.
It’s no secret that Dolly is the queen of country music. She would never accept that title herself, but she has a knack for writing some of the best country songs in history, she’s philanthropic, is downright hilarious, and is a fashion icon.
Over the years, she has had many show-stopping stage looks, red carpet looks, album cover looks… the list is endless.
And back in 2020, she sat down with Vogue to break down 11 of her most iconic looks, spanning from 1974 to the present. Featuring backstory, details, and that signature Dolly Parton humor, it’s absolutely one of my favorite videos.
Here are my five favorite looks from the breakdown.
1974: Jolene Album Cover
She says this was such a fun time in her life because it was right before “Jolene” became a hit. The designer for the outfit was Lucy Adams out of Nashville.
“I always love a puffy sleeve, so I felt pretty comfortable in this whole little outfit.”
1977: Here You Come Again Album Cover
Here You Come Again was Dolly’s first cross-over record. Although the outfit is simple, I think that it screams she is a woman that can do it all.
People told her that doing this cross-over would be a huge mistake, and needless to say, she proved them wrong:
“I was so hoping that this record was going to be a hit. I’m not leaving country; I am taking country with me wherever I go because I AM country!”
This album was her first record to sell a million copies.
1989: Saturday Night Live
Dolly hosted and was the musical guest during this episode of SNL. And while she had a ton of killer outfits that night, her rock and roll, leather, and stud look was hands down amazing.
“I had some of the greatest costumes on that!”
2014: Glastonbury Festival
A vision in white.
This white jumpsuit covered in rhinestones screams a classic Dolly stage look. She recalls being so nervous before this performance because she was worried people would not know her. Little did she know it was going to become historic.
“It will probably go down in history as one of my biggest successes, and this outfit was a big success with me too.”
Her designer made sure she felt glamorous but with the ability to move freely while on stage.
2019: Grammy Awards
This outfit has to go on this list.
Not only was it stunning, but also, at the 2019 Grammy Awards, Dolly was honored with a tribute performance.
The 10-minute group performance included appearances from Miley Cyrus, Kasey Musgraves, Little Big Town, and more. Dolly was honored for her laundry list of musical successes and for supporting charitable causes.
There is no doubt that Dolly Parton has made outstanding contributions to country music, so of course, she had to have fabulous outfits to help her shine through her career’s monumental moments.
