Well, since everybody pretty much died, I suppose we all saw this coming…
Yes, the 1883 Season Finale was absolutely bonkers…. Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) died, Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) died, the two cowboys died, the rest of the wagon train died after separating from the others… it would be easier just to tell you who lived.
Needless to say, the show was a rousing success, a fantastic prequel series to the Paramount smash hit series, Yellowstone, and now that it’s over, fans are wondering… when is Season 2?
Well, hate to break it to you but… there won’t be one.
According to executive producer David Glasser who recently spoke to Hollywood Reporter, 1883 is a one and done series, and Taylor Sheridan is going to use the upcoming 1932 series to tell the next chapter of the Dutton prequel story.
However, there will be some extra bonus episodes of 1883 coming:
“You’ll see. I don’t want to give away too much, but ‘1932’ was always intended to be the second season.
Now the network is excited to bring you something really additional to 1883, which is super exciting. There was one way set with it, there was one version, and now there’s going to be two versions.
Everything is well-thought-out with Taylor. So when you see what’s coming, you’ll see it’s pretty exciting. I think 1883 was an incredible journey.
We’re excited the way fans embraced it and I’m excited for people to see all the other great stuff that we’re doing around it now.”
And when asked if any of the A-list cast is going to make it to shoot the bonus episodes, Glasser was pretty coy:
“I can’t give too much away, but we’re excited for the year ahead.”
That’s that… you can officially put a bow on 1883, as it will not be renewed for a second season. And if I were to take some guesses about the bonus episodes, my guess is that they might be relatively separate from the original story of 1883.
Perhaps a side story about Thomas or Shea? Maybe a few episodes that fill in some missing backstory? Or maybe a few episodes in the future to bridge the gap between 1883 and 1932.
I suppose I wouldn’t be shocked if some of the main cast didn’t reappear. But then again, Taylor Sheridan does a pretty good job of keeping us guessing, and even when you think you have it figured out, he finds some way to surprise you.
Like, we all saw Elsa take an arrow in the very first episode, but it was hard to believe that she would actually die. We also saw Shea think about killing himself all the damn time, but it was still shocking to watch him finally do it.
Either way, Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe is growing faster than he can write it… and that’s a good problem to have.
1932 will follow the next generation of Duttons into the difficulties of Prohibition and the Great Depression, as we continue our prequel series march towards the modern day Dutton Ranch.
Get excited.
The Four Sixes
The Four Sixes ranch was founded by Samuel “Burk” Burnett in 1870, when he bought 100 head of cattle branded with “6666” on them. These days, the ranch is a staggering 266,000 acres, on three different properties, as previously mentioned, it was purchased by a group spearheaded by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.
There’s still no premiere date set for 6666, but we do know that it will likely stream exclusively on Paramount+ (much like 1883), and depending on filming schedules, could possibly be released at some point this year (towards the end of the year).
The show is rumored to star Jefferson White and Ryan Bingham who will reprise their roles as Jimmy and Walker.
Here’s the synopsis from a Paramount+ press release:
“Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing.
The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world-class cowboys are born and made.”
The working title of the upcoming spinoff is simply 6666 (also much like 1883).
Will Jimmy Be Involved?
Jefferson White sat down with us on the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast and explained everything he knows about the upcoming spinoff so far.
Here’s what he had to say:
“We filmed those Four Sixes sequences down at the Four Sixes, which is a real life, huge, working cattle ranch… one of the biggest in the country, one of the oldest in the country. After spending four years on the Yellowstone which is a fictional ranch, it was a real eye-opener to go down to the Sixes which is a real life, incredible, sort of goliath, cattle ranch.
As far as the spinoff goes, I don’t think you’ll be surprised that I, Jeff/Jimmy never have any idea what the fuck is going on, and any time I think I do, Taylor does something better and cooler than I ever could’ve imagined.
All I can say is that I hope… I’m incredibly grateful for the work we’ve gotten to do so far, incredibly proud… all I can say as an actor is job security is very rare and very precious so I wanna play this character as long as they’ll let me.
And we’ll find out together how much longer that is… anytime I think I know what’s best for this character or for this world, Taylor proves me wrong. He knows better than any of us.”
Needless to say, only time will tell, but based on the way we saw Jimmy leave the Yellowstone Ranch at the end of Season 4… it sounds like Jimmy is going to be the star of his own show someday soon.
