Kevin James (Yes, That Kevin James) Cast As Saints Head Coach Sean Payton In New Netflix Movie… And Twitter Is Laughing Its A** Off

A comparison of Kevin James, Sean Payton

As a Saints fan I’m right to be upset by this, aren’t I?

As first reported in Peter King’s Football Morning in America, a new Netflix movie is in the works about New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

And who did they cast for the lead role?

Kevin James.

Yes, that Kevin James. The same Kevin James who’s best known for Paul Blart: Mall Cop and The King of QueensĀ will now be playing the role of Saints head coach Sean Payton.

What the hell is going on here?

The movie, called Home Team, is being produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and will chronicle Sean Payton’s stint as offensive coordinator for his son’s sixth-grade football team during his suspension for the Bountygate scandal in 2012.

Filming for the movie is set to begin this year, and apparently Payton himself has reviewed and edited the script.

Now, first things first: I like Kevin James. He’s been in some great Adam Sandler movies (so I’m sure it’s no coincidence that he was chosen for the role) like Grown Ups and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry,Ā and while I wasn’t a regular watcher ofĀ The King of Queens,Ā I caught a few episodes and enjoyed them when it was on.

But come on, that’s who you choose to play one of the most badass coaches in the NFL? (Remember, I’m biased here). The guy had the balls to go for an onside kick to start the second half of a Super Bowl, and you choose Paul Blart to play him in a movie? No way.

Well I’m not the only one who’s a little bewildered by the casting choice.

And you know Saints players aren’t going to let their coach live this one down.

Others had better ideas for who should play Payton in a movie. And while pretty much any idea is better than Kevin James, some of the more popular names being thrown around were Kenny Chesney and Frankie Muniz, who both actually bear a resemblance to the coach.

See, both great choices. But I guess we’re getting Kevin James instead.

The Saints’ rival Atlanta Falcons also took the opportunity to roast the Saints and Payton over the casting choice.

But just like they do on the field, the Saints managed to get the last laugh over the Falcons on this one.

And just as a reminder that Kenny Chesney actually would have been the perfect choice for this role, here’s Kenny’s 2010 video for “The Boys of Fall” featuring – who else – but SEAN PAYTON.

The perfect choice was RIGHT THERE. How do you screw this up?!
