Yesterday, country music lost a legend.

After a multi-year battle with stomach cancer, country music icon Toby Keith peacefully passed away at 62

“Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time.”

After the Oklahoma native opened up about his diagnosis in 2022, he was very candid about his battle with the disease and spoke about his cancer during one of his final interviews. While he noted he was at peace with what might happen, he also spoke highly of his supportive wife through it all.

Tricia Lucus, who married Keith nearly 40 years ago, stood by his side, providing the utmost support during the diagnosis and treatment.

“She’s been a trooper. She’s the best nurse. The first time we went to Houston, to the hospital, she stepped right in and she just took control and said, ‘We got this. Let’s go.’

So she’s like, ‘We’re going to get this, and don’t worry about it.'”

While Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021, he did not publicly share the news until June 2022. At the time he shared the news of his cancer, Keith had already received six months of chemotherapy and radiation and underwent surgery.

Toby Keith hit the lottery when it came to his partner. We all know that tender moment from the 2023 People’s Choice Country Music Awards, where Tricia was seen wiping tears away during Keith’s performance of “Don’t Let The Old Man In,” but that was just one of the sweet moments the longstanding couple has had.

The two met shortly after Toby Keith graduated high school, dating for three years before tying the knot in March 1984. She had one daughter from a previous marriage, who Toby later adopted, and the couple went on to have two children of their own.

Tricia once told People Magazine in 1991.

“Most people think he is just the most romantic person on the planet. He has his moments of charm. It is nice to get a bouquet of flowers, but I’ve told him, ‘Save the money. Roses die in five to seven days. Buy me an outfit or take me to dinner.’”

Our thoughts go to Tricia and the rest of Keith’s family during this time. Rest easy, Big Dog Daddy.
