Gabrielle Union is a well-known actress, happily married to NBA star Dwyane Wade.
But it wasn’t always like that…
She recently opened up about her struggles in past relationships, including her first marriage of four years to former NFL player Chris Howard, before calling it quits in 2006.
She discussed that relationship while on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, as she shared the dysfunction of the whole relationship.
Union said:
“That first go ’round I was definitely not getting ‘Wife Of The Year’ awards…
In our first marriage, neither one of us felt like the marriage should get in the way of our dating. And so a part of it was keeping up with his activities, and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s what you’re doing? You’re going to feel this one.'”
She confessed that she felt entitled to cheat on him because she was paying all the bills at the time:
“And I just felt entitled to it as well. I was paying all the bills, I was working my ass off, and I felt like that’s what comes… the spoils of riches. And like my dad before me, whoever has the most gets to do whatever they want, is what I thought. It was just dysfunctional from Day 1.
I wish I had more guilt for some of that… I think it was such a stupid relationship that should’ve never got out of the dating phase.”
Dax also admitted that he had a number of open relationships, and his fair share of infidelity as well, prior to marrying Kristen Bell.
However, Gabrielle’s comments caught fire on Twitter, drawing a plethora of comments. A number of folks called her out for her line of thinking, pointing out that it opens the door for men who are the breadwinners to cheat.
Others (correctly) pointed out that her husband was cheating too, and that Gabrielle admitted this was dysfunctional thinking. She was just revealing her flawed thinking at the time, not a belief she still has.
