Earlier this year, in mid March, Sierra Ferrell took the stage of Fox Theater in Boulder, Colorado, for a show.
During her set, she brought up her opener Nick Shoulders, another great emerging Americana artist, on stage to sing a few tunes, including a fantastic cover of the great Hank Williams’ “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You).”
The single was initially written, recorded, and released by Hank in 1951. The tune charted number two on the Billboard Hot Country song, and has been recorded by the likes of Linda Ronstadt, Elvis Presley and more.
The lyrics lay out the feelings of a heartbroken man in a rather simple but poetic and beautiful way:
“Today I passed you on the street And my heart fell at your feet I can’t help it if I’m still in love with you…”
Ferrell and Shoulders do a fantastic job making this a duet.
Shoulders starts the song, and they split the first verse before harmonizing perfectly through the chorus. The simplicity of the fiddle, acoustic guitar, upright bass, and mandolin make for a great supporting melody.
Their folk sound highlights the artists’ sounds very well, but their twang and the supporting composition honors Williams’ original track as well.
What a way to pay tribute to some good classic country music.
Here are some other video clips of Sierra Ferrell from the same night.
