Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) Says Kevin Costner Was His First Ever Celebrity Sighting When He Was 17: “My Mom Short-Circuited”

Luke Grimes life

Not gonna lie, I’d short-circuit if I met Kevin Costner OR Luke Grimes.

Of course, they’re both stars on the hit show Yellowstone, which just premiered Season 5 on Sunday.

In case you live under a rock and haven’t seen it yet, Kevin Costner plays John Dutton, patriarch of the Dutton family, and Luke plays his son Kayce Dutton.

And Luke recently stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to talk about this new season, where he also told a really cool story about the first time he ever saw Kevin Costner in person.

Apparently, when he was a teenager, his sister bought him a plane ticket to L.A. for his 17th birthday, because he’d always had dreams to move there and be an actor.

They did the typical tourist thing, getting a map with celebrity homes on it, driving around to see who they could find.

And as luck would have it, as they were walking down the famous Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, none other than Kevin Costner gets out of the car to head to a movie premiere that was taking place nearby.

And Luke says he’s never heard his moms voice hit the register it did when they spotted Kevin in the wild:

“He was my first ever celebrity sighting. The first time I ever came to L.A., my sister bought me a plane ticket for my 17th birthday, so I could come to L.A.

I’ve always wanted to move here and act and all that stuff, we come, we’re looking for celebrities anywhere we can.

We get those maps, we’re driving up and seeing closed gates, trying to find celebrity homes. Finally we’re walking down Sunset one day, and they’re having a movie premiere at the directors house down the street, and Kevin Costner gets out of the car.

And it’s the first famous person I’d ever seen, and my mom short-circuited. Lost her mind. It was the first time I saw the power of Kevin Costner.

Her voice hit a register I didn’t even know she had. She was just yelling his name, she got his attention, it worked.”

I mean, what a story…

I have a feeling my mom would’ve done the exact same thing, and Luke’s right, it’s a true testament to the power of the man himself.

Jimmy asked if Luke had ever told his TV dad that story, which he said he didn’t think he had, but assured him his mom had gotten the chance to actually meet Kevin since they’ve been working on the show together:

“I don’t know if he does, but he’s met my mom. Yeah, they took a photo together, and she kinda put a death grip on him and she was attached to him for like five minutes.

I had to pry her off of Kevin Costner.”

Classic… a woman after my own heart.

Luke also noted in the interview that his country album is set to be released sometime early next year, so we have that to look forward to in addition to the rest of this Yellowstone season that just kicked off.

Make sure you check out his interview here, it’s pretty damn funny:

And of course, with the Season 5 premiere, we also heard some great music from Robert Earl Keen, Dolly Parton, Zach Bryan, a triple shot of Shane Smith & The Saints, and Hayes Carll this past weekend, with much more good stuff to come.
