Luke Bryan Says He’s “Really Into ‘Yellowstone’ and The Music…It’s Texas Music, Cowboy Music”

Luke Bryan = BIG Yellowstone guy.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Luke was asked what would be something “unexpected” from him right now, and he toyed with the idea of making some Yellowstone-inspired cowboy music.

“I’m really into ‘Yellowstone,’ and the music in ‘Yellowstone,’ it’s Texas music, cowboy music. I’m obviously not a cowboy, but it makes me wonder how I could do a really retro-sounding cowboy song that isn’t just drums, bass, guitar and steel guitar.”

If you’ve seen the show, you know exactly what Luke is referring to. Tyler Childers, Whiskey Myers (who made a cameo appearance), Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Turnpike Troubadours, Chris Stapleton, Blackberry Smoke, and Ryan Bingham (who stars in the show) are just some of artists you’re regularly going to hear on the show.

Are they all Texas music? Not really, but I know what Luke is getting at. It’s real deal country music and anytime a star as big as Luke is saying he’s getting inspired by real deal country music (as opposed to the typical Nashville pop-country garbage), it’s probably a good thing for the genre.

Of course this is just an off the cuff, hypothetical type of question, but if Luke wants to embrace that Texas country and/or the cowboy country sound as he called it, I suppose I’ll take anything that swings the pendulum back towards the traditional. Now, execution might be a whole other story…

And he did follow that up with a comment about some Duran Duran, 80’s style, synth music… so who really knows what he wants to do.
