750-Pound Sea Lion Nearly Capsizes Canadian Couple’s Fishing Boat

Sea lions may be cute and what not when you go to Sea World or your local zoo, but don’t get it twisted…

They don’t mess around.

Just take this video for example.

A Canadian couple from Vancouver Island nearly saw their life flash before their eyes, when a massive California sea lion completely jumped into their 14-foot fishing boat Peddler’s Bay, almost capsizing it.

According to the Times Colonist, one witness estimated the sea lion to weigh around 750-pounds, enough to send that boat toppling over.

And to make matters worse? The couple was trying to get away from some nearby killer whales when the sea lion made its move.

The wild event happened to Ernest and Viesia Godek, and Ernest told the outlet:

“It looked like it was very distressed and its teeth were exposed. It tipped the boat over to the point where we had to hang on to the gunnels, (and) water started pouring into the boat.

I was just hoping that we wouldn’t totally tip over.”

The footage was shot from a group of nearby whale watchers, and you can hear the senior guide for the Prince of Whales whale watching boat, Mark Malleson, yell in the video:

“You’re going to want to get out of there.”

That’s when the sea lion slams into the boat, and all hell breaks loose.

Although the sea lion’s efforts rocked the boat violently, sending a lot of water into it, both Ernest and Viesia were able to escape with no injuries, and Malleson followed behind them on their way back to safety.

Great day of fishing, eh?
