Travis Tritt’s “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” Is Still The Best Back-Porch-Sitting Song (But Here Are Some Other Contenders)

Travis Tritt country music

So, I recently moved into a new apartment with a big window in my room and a screened in balcony.

Now, neither of those things really sound like a porch, but for the last three years, I’ve lived in a dorm in which my only window was to a hallway where lots of people would walk by.

Having a second-floor window and balcony means that I can now open my blinds or sit outside in peace. It closet thing I’ve had to a porch in a long time.

Of course, this means that I have been thinking about songs that are perfect for mornings sitting on the balcony with a cup of coffee.

The first one that came to mind was “It’s a Great Day to be Alive” because… duh.

It’s the perfect good vibes, feel-good song.

The lyrics are about appreciating all of the little things that are going right in life even if other, bigger things are stressful:

“And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shining
When I close my eyes…”

I mean, try to tell me this song isn’t the perfect song for porch-sitting. If The Andy Griffith Show was made today, I’m certain Andy would play this song on his guitar for Opie and Aunt Bee.

I’ll admit this song is starting to get some age on it, so I wanted to find some new contenders for the best porch-sitting song.

Here are five of my favorites!

“Strawberry Queen” by Charles Wesley Godwin

This song was definitely my first thought even though it is very different than the Travis Tritt song. I think it’s because “Strawberry Queen” gives me the same feel-good vibes.

I can totally picture listening to this song on a porch, gazing out at a strawberry field.

The song itself is a really sweet love song about a man who falls in love with a woman he sees as royalty. The extended metaphor is gorgeous, and as someone who was raised near a bunch of strawberry fields, this song will always have a special place in my heart.

Memorable lyrics: “So I wrapped a bow around my heart and placed it in a box of cherry wood / I asked her if she could take that box and it good.”

“All Your’n” by Tyler Childers

Tyler Childers has a whole has such porch-sitting vibes to me. There’s something beautifully simple yet complex about his lyrics that remind me of looking at nature.

Now, I’ll admit this song is about a different type of relaxation, but I think it has the same idea. And honestly, it makes me happy and that’s the only real criteria here.

Memorable lyrics: “Goddess in my Days Inn pen, the muse I ain’t refusin’ / The part of me that ain’t around I’m always talking to”

“Western Movies” by Traveller

This song is a big nostalgia fest for me, and I will always love it for that.

It’s about dreaming and imagining yourself in a western movie. And honestly, who doesn’t do some good ol’ daydreaming while sitting on the porch?

It’s the perfect time for reflection and calm.

Memorable lyrics: “My lady doesn’t get it / It appeals to the ramblin’ bandit in me”

“Porch Swing Angel” by Muscadine Bloodline

Come on… this song is about relaxing on a porch, and this is an article about relaxing on the porch.

Of course, I had to include it. Plus, it’s Muscadine Bloodline, so it’s very good.

Memorable lyrics: “Got my heart strings tangled / Got those eyes that’ll bring you to your knees / It’s her smile like Sundays”

“Ride Out in the Country” by Yola

I had to include a song off of Yola’s album Walk Through Fire because the entire thing has the perfect vibes for this list.

I went with this song though because the lines of the breeze and feeling satisfied are perfect descriptions for the serenity of just existing on a porch for a while.

Memorable lyrics: “The country satisfies my soul / When I think I’m goin’ crazy”
