American Idol Contestant Wins Judges Over With Soulful “Tennessee Whiskey” Cover

American Idol is back…

I don’t watch it, I kind of despise it, but nonetheless, it’s back for it’s like 10,000th season or something like that.

And while I really used to enjoy those bozos bombing on the first day, and Simon Cowell ripping them a new one, those days are long gone.

However, every so often someone shows up and plays a little bit of country music.

In the past few years we’ve seen Tyler Childers auditions, Chris Stapleton, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and more, but today, contestant Dontrell Briggs punched his ticket to Hollywood with a cover of “Tennessee Whiskey.”

Of course, the song was originally written by Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove, and first recorded by David Allan Coe and then George Jones, but Dontrell here takes a run at the bluesy Chris Stapleton arrangement.

And while Luke Bryan was on the fence, the performance was enough to get him through to the next round.
