Yellowstone’s Kelly Reilly Didn’t Think She Was Cut Out For The Role Of Beth Dutton: “This Character Is A Beast”

Beth Dutton Yellowstone

The one and only Beth Dutton.

Brains, beauty, beastmode… she’s a triple threat of badass that has captured the hearts of Yellowstone fans across the country.

I mean, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen “Beth Dutton is my spirit animal” plastered all over the internet. You’re not really hearing that about any other character…

And while she may have taken it to even another level during Season 4 (a number of fans were upset over her treatment of Carter), I think her character is poised for an even better story in Season 5 (coming this fall).

Played by English actress Kelly Reilly, it’s an absolute crime that she wasn’t considered for a SAG Award (although the cast as a whole is nominated).

However, according to Kelly, she wasn’t sure if she was cut out for the role when she was first approached by Taylor Sheridan. However, he knew she was perfect for the role right from the beginning:

“This character is a beast… I didn’t know I was Beth, I took me a while to really find her, she’s like stepping into a sports car. How do I go from naught to 100 in three seconds?

And when I first met him I hadn’t found her yet so I’m not sure what he saw.

I do remember having a wobble moment where I thought ‘I don’t know if I can’ and ‘I’m not sure I’m going to be able to pull this off,’ because it is such a tremendously complicated role… I wasn’t sure if I was the right person for it.”

But Taylor helped her tap into the mindset of Beth, and the rest is history:

“He would fill my head and call me up at midnight and be like ‘here’s what you need to know about Beth.’ I have notebooks and journals, literally, I would just be writing everything down he would tell me… I still have them.

Beth is Taylor’s creation and I all I ever wanted to do was show him I could do it and make her real for him… because it is such a bold, brave character.”

Well… mission accomplished.

How To Get Rich According To Beth Dutton

As much as the show is about the empire and legacy of the great and powerful John Dutton (and as much as well all love Kevin Costner), the show wouldn’t be shit without Rip and Beth.

Yep, for my money, Yellowstone is all about Rip and Beth, the baddest power couple in the business.

Beth (Kelly Reilly) is THE definition of “boss bitch,” proving time and time again that she is not to be messed with. Whether she’s in the boardroom or on a bar stool, surviving a bomb or smashing up a boutique clothing store… Beth takes care of business.

In Season 4, Episode 3, she drops a life lesson on Carter after he tried to pull that shit in the boot store. On the car ride home, Beth tells Carter her universal truth about getting rich, and it’s pretty damn simple:

“There is a universal truth. It doesn’t matter where you live, man or woman, it is as true today as it was a thousand fucking years ago.

You want nice things, you want the best? There is only four ways to get rich… four, that’s it.”

So without further ado…

1. Inherit it.
2. Steal it.
3. Work really, really fucking hard.

“You’ll learn, you’ll fail, learn more, fail more… and don’t let anyone outwork you. Never.”

And of course, the last one…

4. Learn how to suck a dick like you lost your car keys in it.

There you have it… as only Beth Dutton could explain it.
