On This Date: Pistol Annies Release Their Third Studio Album, ‘Interstate Gospel’

Pistol annies country music

I can never get enough of the Pistol Annies.

The super girl-group made up of Miranda LambertAshley Monroe and Angaleena Presley have been together since releasing their debut record Hell on Heels in 2011, and have since released three more studio albums in Annie Up, Interstate Gospel, and most recently, Hell Of A Holiday.

And on this date in 2018, they released their third studio album, Interstate Gospel

It reached #1 on the Billboard U.S. Top Country Albums chart, and was also their very first Grammy-nominated project when it was nominated for Best Country Album at the 62nd Grammy Awards.

With just the right amount of fun on tracks like “Got My Name Changed Back” and “Sugar Daddy,” balanced with heartbreakers like “Masterpiece” and “Cheyenne,” it takes you on a journey through the highs and lows of womanhood and how it relates to so many different aspects of life.

As the only three writers featured on the tracklist, you can feel every bit of their experiences in every word they sing.

Ashley said that came as a result of living life and the five years that passed between Annie Up and this record:

“I feel like we all three have grown individually as artists and as humans over the past five years. I mean, you kinda start honing in on who you are with every year of your life.”

Miranda added that as life got more and more complicated for them, it translated into their music and what they wanted to say:

“The songs are a little more complex. The songs are a little more grown up, a little deeper than we’ve gone in the past, maybe.

And so capturing that musically to match the lyrics and the feeling of what we felt when we wrote it, I think, was a longer process than we had experienced before.

But we knew, let it breathe, let it take time, ‘cuz when it gets there, it’s gonna be right.”

I reiterate that their music is so important for the exact reason Miranda has spoken about in previous interviews… ain’t nobody else talkin’ about important stuff right now, like sugar daddies, momma and the milkman, and how much fun it can apparently be to get divorced:

“This band is so important to me and for female music and perspective.

Because there’s three of us, it’s such a relief in a different way. It makes me more brave, because when there’s three of us, we can say whatever we want.”

Cheers to that and many more Pistol Annies albums in the future.

They posted some behind-the-scenes footage from their album photoshoot today to celebrate, and it looks like Ashley was not a fan of the dirty pond they had to stand in or getting her hair in it:

“Happy 3rd birthday to to our album Interstate Gospel. Here’s a never before seen video from the album photoshoot to celebrate.

*Hippie Annie would like to make it know that she has a sensory disorder that makes her detest slimy goo pond floors on her feet…among other disorders.”
