Did you know rays could fly? Because I had no idea.
Nature never ceases to amaze me, and the nature videographers that capture footage like this never cease to amaze me either.
This incredible video of Giant Devil Rays (Mobula Rays) soaring out of the water filmed off the Western coast of Mexico.
Rays are a family of cartilaginous fishes that spend most of their time in the open ocean as opposed to sifting around the sea floor like other species of rays.
Rays can grow to almost unfathomable sizes, with some even tipping the scales at more than 2,000 pounds. Despite their massive heft, they’re still able to launch themselves more than 6-feet out of the water, flapping their fins like the wings the birds.
The aerial displays picture in the video below are conducted in order to impress potential mates during the breeding season.
“While spring is feeding time for the ocean dwellers off the western coast of Mexico, it’s also mating time for the giant eagle rays.
Their eye-catching leaps out of the water serve as a way to get noticed.”
