‘The Voice’ Contestants Battle Out Insanely Good Covers Of “Tennessee Whiskey”

I’d be remiss if I didn’t start this off by saying I hate shows like this…

I don’t watch The Voice, American Idol, America’s Got Talent… none of that shit. Aside from a few exceptions, I don’t think singing “competition” TV shows are really the way to make yourself a career in music. Don’t get me wrong, it happens, but out of all the people that participate, and even many of the winners, how many of them do you still hear from? Not many.

However, I will check in on the performances from time to time, especially if there is a strong country contestant, or a great song. Like the time that kid auditioned with Cody Jinks’ “Cast No Stones” on American Idol or that dude from the Nepal that was confusing the band with his incredible arrangement of CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain.” Dug the hell outta that.

But tonight, I’m glad I did.

Everybody and their mother tries to cover “Tennessee Whiskey,” so much so that I rarely even care to hear it unless I know the artist is gonna do a good job. It’s just too damn hard to compete with Chris. But during tonight’s battle round on The Voice, John Legend pitted contestants Bailey Rae and Sid Kingsley against each other with the Chris Stapleton (originally David Allan Coe and George Jones) hit.

And holy hell, they both CRUSHED it.

I don’t envy John with that decision…
