We’re back with another edition of On This Date, and honestly, is there a more iconic song in all of country music?

It’s certainly debatable, but Dolly Parton’s 1973 hit “Jolene” is unquestionably in the conversation.

Written by Dolly Parton about a red-headed bank teller that was flirting with her husband Carl Dean, “Jolene was released 47 years ago today. Since then, it has been covered by everybody from Miley Cyrus and John Mayer to Kesha and Jack White, and has even inspired response songs like Cam’s “Diane.”

Dolly originally premiered the song on The Porter Wagoner Show.

Dolly’s goddaughter Miley Cyrus does one hell of a cover.

Even Jack White, who wound up recording his live cover, performed it quite often during his time in The White Stripes.
