When Casey Donahew’s One Light Town record dropped last summer, there was one song that immediately hooked me from the jump:
“Bad Guy”
A self-aware ballad from a guy that’s a piece of shit and knows it, “Bad Guy” is dripping with brutal honesty, the kind that country music could use a little more of these days.
“Maybe I’m just a bad guy, I don’t know why, but you’ll curse the day we met
I’ll be your downfall till it’s last call, and I’m not coming home to you
And I’ll break everything you love and make you cry,
‘Cause, baby, I’m just a bad guy.”
And the best part? This isn’t your typical feeling sorry for yourself, you fucked up and lost her, tear in your beer kind of country song. No, there’s a casual nonchalance going on here almost as if to say, “welp, that’s just the way it is… on to the next.”
Maybe you dated guys like this, maybe you are a guy like this, or maybe you used to be a guy like this and finally figured it all out… either way, it’ll hit home for a lot of us.
“Bad Guy” is set to impact Texas country radio on August 31st.
