Cody Johnson Remembers Late Great Charlie Daniels With “Long Haired Country Boy” Tribute

It’s hard to believe we lost the great Charlie Daniels today.

Charlie’s has been an influence to just about everybody in country music in one way or another. Everybody from Travis Tritt and Luke Combs, to Koe Wetzel and Jake Owen have shared their memories and condolences today, among many many others… but there’s no doubt about it, Charlie is an absolute legend.

Anybody who is anybody has covered Charlie at one point in their career, but some have even gone as far to honor Charlie with full-blown recordings of his music.

Enter Mr. Cody Johnson.

Cody covered “Long Haired Country Boy” on his 2019 Ain’t Nothin’ To It record. He shared that performance video this afternoon, accompanied by a touching introduction.

“I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Daniels some years ago, and he was one of the sweetest men I’ve ever met; so respectful and cordial. I’ve met some of my “heroes” before and been a little disappointed, but, Mr. Daniels was NOT one of those moments. I feel very honored to have re-recorded “Long Haired Country Boy” with my band The Rockin CJB before Mr. Daniels passing; I was able to hear that he had listened to the track, and gave it his stamp of approval. “The Legend of Wooley Swamp” from the 1980 Full Moon album was quite possibly one of the first Rock sounds I heard aside from Elvis and Ronnie Van Zandt, and, it shaped me forever. Rest Peacefully Mr. Daniels; thank you for what you gave to us all while you were here.”

RIP Charlie.
