Willie Nelson Releases Cover Of Billy Joe Shaver’s “We Are The Cowboys”

Loving me some Willie Nelson lately.

The 87-year-old country music legend is gearing up to release his 70th studio album, First Rose Of Spring, next month and he just dropped another new track from it.

While there a couple new tunes, the album mostly features covers from other artists, including a recording of Chris Stapleton’s unreleased “Our Song” and this one, “We Are The Cowboys,” originally penned by Billy Joe Shaver.

‘We Are The Cowboys” was written and recorded for Shaver’s 1981 record, I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Someday).

“We are the cowboys the true sons of freedom
We are the men who will get the job done
We’re picking our words so we won’t have to eat them
We’re rounding them up and then driving them home.”

The music video was filmed out at Willie’s ranch just outside of Austin, Texas.

Willie also joined Shaver, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings for a recording of the same song back in 2000.
