Throwback To Casey Donahew’s Stellar Cover Of Matchbox 20’s “3AM”

Straight outta 1997.

Matchbox 20’s “3AM” is one of those iconic ’90s songs that’s been covered by everybody and their mother, and most of the time… they suck. Rob Thomas has such a distinct voice, and the emotion he puts into this song (about his mother battling cancer) just simply can’t be beat, especially when it comes to his acoustic piano version.

However, this is not one of those times.

Back in 2017, Casey Donahew recorded a cover of the 1997 hit for his greatest hits album, 15 Years: The Wild Ride, and hell if he didn’t knock it out of the park.

He stayed to true to the original song, but also gave a nod to Matchbox’s stellar acoustic version for the first verse with the piano work. And as many times as I’ve heard this song, if I’m not going to listen to Rob himself, it’s gotta be Casey Donahew.
