Kane Brown’s New Single “Cool Again” Is A Pop Breakup Song That’s Now About Quarantine… I Guess

Matthew Berinato

I guess we won’t even pretend to put out country songs anymore…

Alright look… Kane has some talent, and has proven on more than one occasion that he can put out a pretty good song, and a fairly country one. “Short Skirt Weather,” had a good ’90s country hook to it, and “For My Daughter” was another good one. He’s teased a couple other songs with that ’90s country vibe as well.

But then when it’s time to pick a single, we’re back to something called “Cool Again.” And according to Kane, in light of the COVID-19 situation, the whole meaning of the song has changed for him:

“We wrote ‘Cool Again’ at a writing retreat when it was about 20 degrees outside. At the time, it was about missing warm weather, but then it became so much more. It made us think about all the amazing memories of summer. We were really wanting to go back to that. I think that’s something people can really relate to in their own lives, especially right now…. it’s a whole new song for me, you just want everything to go back to how it was, other than this quarantine.”

Here’s a snapshot of the chorus:

“Cause I just wanna be cool again, cool again, cool again
Like we were last summer
Want you again, you again, you again
To be stealin’ my covers
All tangled in each other, nights still playin’ back in my head
I just wanna be cool again, cool again, cool again, yeah.”

Riveting stuff…

Like I said, I wish Kane would release more of his country stuff, but whatever, it’s not up to me. Put out a pop song, put out whatever you want to, but don’t try and sell me that it fits the current state of the world right now. Nobody sitting at home missing their family and friends, wishing they could visit their grandma or grandpa, or the guy that just lost his job thanks to Coronavirus, is going to hear this and think “yeah, I get it… man, I just wish it could all be ‘cool again.'”

And while we’re on the topic, let me update our running list of new songs that hit home for all of us stuck in quarantine:

Luke Combs: “Six Feet Apart”

Riley Green: Better Than Me”

Eric Church: “Through My Ray Bans”

and then we have Kane with “Cool Again.”

It’s not a pandemic song, it’s still just a break up song, it’s a pop song, and that’s it.

And PS, we’re still blocked…
