Since October 10th, 1992, World Mental Health Day has held the objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.
But just like every other awareness day or month, mental illness isn’t something that only impacts us at a certain time. It’s important that we are assessing our mental health on a regular basis. Several country stars, including Chris Stapleton, have taken major steps to help reduce the stigma of mental illness.
Chris Stapleton’s first, and really his only music video ever was for “Fire Away.” Instead of working toward self-promotion, he took this opportunity to portray the very difficult side of mental illness. Ultimately, the video results in a woman taking her own life and leaving her husband alone after he has done everything possible to help her. Showing that this situation is not only difficult for the person suffering, but also for those providing support.
In creating this video, Chris and his wife, Morgane, joined with The Campaign to Change Directions. This is a coalition of various individuals working together to change the culture in America regarding mental health, mental illness, and wellness.
I strongly encourage you to watch the behind the scenes interview for this video. Chris, the video director, and actors speak openly and honestly about mental health.
The Campaign to Change Direction helps us to learn and understand the five signs of emotional suffering.
1. Change in Personality 2. Agitation 3. Withdrawal 4. Decline in Personal Care 5. Hopelessness
