It’s not surprising that Chris Young’s new single has had a profound impact on the country music community. If you’ve lived long enough, you undoubtedly have a name that comes to mind the second you hear “Drowning.”
Maybe it’s a grandfather that taught you how to fish when you were a kid. Maybe it’s one of your parents that passed away way too soon. Maybe you lost your child and you’re still struggling to cope and understand why these type of things happen. For Chris Young, that name is “Adam,” the name of a good friend who unfortunately passed away in a car accident a few years back.
In the gut-wrenching new music video, real people with real stories of heartache and loss are filmed holding up photos of their person. The person whose name immediately comes to mind when they hear this song. Because, at the end of the day, that’s exactly what country music is supposed to be about. Real people with real stories.
And, thanks to Chris Young, many of those real people, both the ones in the video and the ones watching at home, are going to find some comfort and healing in the words of this song. And maybe for just a few minutes, they might be able to make some sense of a word that doesn’t seem to make any sense at all.
Music is powerful, and it’s songs (and videos) like this one that show us just how powerful it can be.
