The Highwomen Debut A “Gay Country Song” With Jason Isbell And It’s Really Damn Good

The Highwomen continue to impress.

The new supergroup performed at Newport Folk Festival this weekend, and had a little surprise for the fans when they debuted a new song called, “If She Ever Leaves Me.”

Jason Isbell wrote the song along with his wife and Highwomen member Amanda Shires and Chris Tompkins.

Initially I thought this song would be one of heterosexual country love…And it occurred to me that maybe, just maybe, Brandi Carlile will sing this song and it can be a gay country song. So then we wrote it from that perspective, me and Amanda and her friend Chris Tompkins up in Nashville, Tennessee. And then what I hadn’t thought about was, we’re gonna have to take this song to Brandi Carlile…”

Carlile sings her ass off on this song. You gotta love what this group is bringing to the table. This it top-notch country music.
