Macon, GA native, Greg Pope, submitted his flavor idea for Lay’s newest potato chip and the company selected it as a finalist. Pope says the fried green tomato flavor is inspired by his father’s home cooking, and the southern staple has a special meaning in their family.
Pope says when he came across the contest online, the fried green tomato flavor was the first thing that popped into his mind, and when Lay’s picked it as a finalist, his dad says he was overwhelmed.
“I had no idea that it had had such an impact in his childhood that he would remember,” says Pope’s father.
If he wins the contest in October he will receive $1 million, and plans to start a college fund for his 3-year-old daughter.
