The incredibly talented Jason Isbell held nothing back while speaking to Rolling Stone about today’s version of modern country music. If you haven’t listened to his album The Nashville Sound, it’s fantastic. Simple as that. I’ve spent many a day cruising around Chicago on my bike (pedals) cranking that one.
Prior to CMA Fest Isbell tweeted he wouldn’t be playing any of the events and said, “The reason is because I did not want to do that.”
He elaborated on what modern country is today saying:
“I don’t like that kind of music at all. Sometimes I’ll hear a song that I really like that’s in that world. I like that song “Girl Crush.” Some of Miranda Lambert’s songs are really well-written. Stapleton’s great. But most of that stuff is just real bad music to me. It also seems like a huge mess. I like Nashville when it’s just regular old Nashville and there’s not a whole lot going on.”
Isbell is at a point in his career where he can say just about anything he wants, and people will listen. He’s a prolific songwriter and musician. He’s respected to the highest degree not just in country circles, but in music as a whole.
