On This Date: Kenny Chesney Releases Country Hit “Summertime” In 2006

Kenny Chesney

We’re just barely getting into spring, but I think all of us are ready to blast this classic Kenny Chesney song once it’s officially time for summer.

“Summertime” was released on this day in 2006 (17 years ago, feel old yet?) and it was immediately a hit. The song was released as the third single for Chesney’s album The Road and the Radio, which technically was released and recorded in 2005. The first two singles for the album were “Who You’d Be Today” and “Living in Fast Forward.”

The album was chalk full of classic country hits, but the one that stood out above the rest was “Summertime.” I’d argue to say that the timing of the release 17 years ago was perfect, as April is the month where it starts to finally move out of the grips of winter, and the warmth makes everyone excited for Summer. Great marketing move by Chesney’s team, and it still delivers the same feeling today.

Chesney’s ode to “Summertime” did very well commercially, and ended up topping the US country charts. It was the tenth time that a Kenny Chesney song sat at the US #1 spot on the country chart.

I listened to the song on repeat as I wrote this article and I’ll say that the lyrics do just the trick in regards to preparing you for summer to roll around.

Try to listen to the poetic country writing of Chesney and not long for a trip to the ball park or a day out on the lake:

“And it’s two bare feet on the dashboard
Young love and an old Ford

Cheap shades and a tattoo
And a Yoo-Hoo bottle on the floorboard

Perfect song on the radio
Sing along cause it’s one we know
It’s a smile, it’s a kiss
It’s a sip of wine, it’s summertime
Sweet summertime…”

That perfect song on the radio that is mentioned in the song just so happened to be Chesney’s 2006 hit. Would that be considered Song-ception? A song within a song? I think so…

Listen to the classic track below and get ready to skip past Spring and dive right into “Summertime.”
