6 Things We Want To Happen To Country Music In 2017

We said 2016 was going to be a great year, but 2017 is going to be even better.

Along with Whiskey Riff, the overall state of country music continues to grow. Like I said, 2016 was pretty awesome, but I do have some hopes for the future and direction of country music, starting this year.

Here’s what we want to see:

1. More Radio Play.

Country music radio is lacking depth. It’s a not a secret. Fans know it and artists know it. Stapleton had a breakout year and still isn’t played all that much on the radio. Isbell and Sturgill need to be on country radio. Margo Price, Brandy Clark and Cody Jinks need to be on country radio. Period.

2. More Women.

2016 finished up with a solid group of female artists making huge strides in the country music world. Let’s continue that momentum.

3. Experimentation.

The boundaries of country music, both lyrically and musically, are being pushed further than ever before and I like it. Variety is good, creativity is good. Let’s foster an environment for that.

4. New Artists.

Whiskey Riff is all about exposing new artists. We’re going to do our best to keep them coming. You do the same.

5. Chill The F*ck Out.

I’m not saying you have to like everyone in country music, but the divisiveness among the fans is unbearable. Every single time we post a Sam Hunt or Luke Bryan video, there are 743 comments about how “he’s not country” or “he doesn’t look country.” On the other hand, when I post a Cody Jinks or Jason Isbell video, I don’t see any comments about how great it is to see “real country” from us.

Share what you love, don’t listen to what you hate and stop talking shit for sake of complaining. It’s old.

6. Growth.

Country is already one of the most popular genres in the United States and growing, but why stop there? Let’s make it king. Let’s share more good country music, discover more great artists and make country more popular in America’s largest cities, Europe, Australia, and everywhere in between.
