6 Sad, and Depressing, Truths To Little Big Town’s “Better Man”

Little Big Town’s song “Better Man” written by Taylor Swift really puts me on my feels.

The lyrics speak truth- even if it’s the sad pathetic kind of truth that no one really wants to hear. Girls, I know you’ll be able to relate to this one. Take a listen.

1. “I know I’m probably better off on my own than lovin’ a man who didn’t know what he had when he had it.”

“I wish it wasn’t 4am, standing in the mirror saying to myself, you know you had to do it
I know the bravest thing I ever did was run.”

It’s a hard to come to terms with the fact that you’d actually be better on your own than staying with him. You know that it’s true and you’d be smart to leave, you just don’t want to believe that a man you love simply can not love you the way that you deserve.

2. “And I see the permanent damage you did to me never again, I just wish I could forget when it was magic”

One of the most difficult aspects of trying to move on from a relationship is the memories of the good times you had together. Your mind always takes you back to how it used to be when you were in love. It’s hard to get past the fact that the person you thought he was back then isn’t the same person he’s become today.

3. “I’m hanging on every careless word hoping it might turn sweet again. Like it was in the beginning.”

Going off the last point, forgetting is the hardest part. How are you supposed to just forget all of the good times you had? It hurts to think about the way he used to make you laugh, the way he used to treat you like you were the most precious thing in the world, the way he used to go out of his way to make you feel special, the times you sang at the top of your lungs to your song together, the times he’d spin you around while you were dancing just because he knew how much you liked that, and the worst of it all, the innocent feeling you had when he kissed you for the first time.

You can’t just forget things like that. It will take time but as hard as it is, the man you thought he was back then clearly isn’t the man he really is. He’s making that clear. You deserve better love from a better man.

4. “Sometimes, in the middle of the night, I can feel you again. But I just miss you, and I just wish you were a better man.”

It’s inevitable- you are going to have feelings that will make you miss “him.” Let’s make this clear though, you don’t miss him. You miss the man you thought he was, the man he should’ve been, and the good times in the relationship. The man you “miss” doesn’t exist anymore.

5. “You’re talking down to me like I’ll always be around. You push my love away like it’s some kind of loaded gun. Boy, you never thought I’d run.”

He failed to love you like you were leaving. He stopped caring. He stopped asking. He stopped pursuing. He stopped loving you yet he still never thought you’d actually leave. He took your love for granted. He missed his chance.

6. “We might still be in love, if you were a better man.”

You wanted him to be that man. You wish he could’ve been a man and loved you the right way. You saw the potential and the future but you had to let go of that because even though it could’ve worked, it wasn’t because he wasn’t good enough. You might still be in love IF he was a better man. Key word IF.

That “better man” who will love you the right way is out there, you just have to move on to get to him.
