The Story Behind Tim McGraw’s CMA Awards Performance Will Break Your Heart

Song of the Year was well deserved.

In case you were watching the World Series and missed Tim McGraw’s emotional performance of Humble and Kind on the CMA Awards last night, he was joined on stage by over 60 kids with candles in their hands, shortly after the song won Song of the Year. (Shout out to songwriter Lori Mckenna)

It wasn’t until after the performance that he took to Instagram to let us know that the kids were Ben Ellis’ students and children.

Ben Ellis is the Tennessee teacher from the video Tim shared awhile back of students singing outside of their beloved teacher’s home as he battled cancer. He recently lost his fight, but his five children along with nearly 60 other students had the opportunity to honor him last night. His wife even sat front row to watch the absolutely beautiful performance that had just about everyone in tears.

I had the honor of working with these kids yesterday, and their faith, strength, and love for each other was so inspiring.  These are students between 2nd and 12th grade who are about to go on stage to perform with Tim McGraw at the CMA Awards, and when we told them it was time to get ready, they asked if they had time and if they could sing one more song of worship together. Mr. Ellis would be so proud of these amazing kids, I know I am.
