There are some new artists we are really, really, excited about. One is Maren Morris. The other is Ryan Hurd.
We got a chance to see Ryan at a CMA Songwriters series here in Chicago a couple months back. It was one of the coolest shows I’ve ever experienced. Ryan was the young “new guy” on stage, but he quickly grabbed the room and didn’t let go. He played originals, and songs he has written for other artists such as “Later On” by The Swon Brothers.
When he performed “Good as You Think I Am” you could feel the person next to you get goosebumps. Legendary songwriter Brett James smiled and shook his head in approval as Ryan had the room holding on to every lyric. I looked at Wes and said “I can’t wait to buy this guy’s music.”
Well, his EP is here. Panorama is something special – one of the best debut EPs in memory. Grab his EP here.
“Good As You Think I Am” is so raw. So well-written. The song takes you somewhere. Maybe it’s somewhere you know well, maybe it’s somewhere you will eventually be. One of the best songs I’ve heard all year.
“Drunk People” shows Ryan can have a little fun, which is important. The song is gonna give you an itch for a beer, regardless of what time you’re listening.
“Mississippi to Me” is drop you on your ass good. I’ll leave it at that.
“Panorama” is sonically the most intense track on the EP. The storytelling of two people in love takes on a life of its own.
The future of country music is bright. An artist like Ryan Hurd is a major reason why. There are real songwriters out there. Real storytellers. Real artists. Ryan is all of the above.
Whiskey Riff is the most entertaining country site…ever.
