Tonight is the start of the 2015 MLB playoffs and we’re pretty damn excited to have our Chicago Cubs in the playoffs. Tomorrow I’ll be a wreck, but that’s another story. Two of the things I love most in the world are baseball and country music, so I thought I’d have a little fun and try to match up the personality of these baseball teams with the character of some of your favorite country music stars. So who will you be rooting for this October?
St. Louis Cardinals – George Strait
The Cardinals are the epitome of class when it comes to a baseball organization. George is the epitome of class when it comes to country music. As much as I hate it, the Cards are always one of the best teams in baseball and have been consistently winning for decades. George has been a consistent force in country music for decades and just released his 29th studio album. Yes, 29th!
New York Mets – Kenny Chesney
The Mets are a historic franchise that has had plenty of winning seasons in their history and after spending a few years in the basement, are back to World Series contenders. Kenny Chesney’s latest project, ‘The Big Revival,’ is amazing. His last couple albums were pretty bad, but just like the Mets, Kenny is back!
Los Angeles Dodgers – Blake Shelton
We all know Blake spends a lot of time in L.A. when he is filming The Voice and he even has a place out there. Blake shines under those Hollywood lights and the Dodgers are no different. Clayton Kershaw is known to dig a little country music too.
Chicago Cubs – Sam Hunt
The Cubs are young, exciting, making a lot of noise and doing things a little differently. For example, pajama parties, drunken karaoke nights, private zoos, and dressing up the rookies like princesses are just some of the clubhouse shenanigans we’ve seen this year in Chicago. Either way, the future is bright. Sam Hunt is no different. Young, exciting, and approaching country music a little differently, the future is just as bright for the young country superstar. I’m even going to call this a Cubs hat.
Pittsburgh Pirates – Carrie Underwood
The Pirates have been a consistent playoff team the past couple of years, but have also been consistently unable to win the big one. Similarly, Carrie Underwood has lost to Miranda Lambert in many of the award shows the past few years. Sometimes your hot and someone else is hotter. The Pirates are writing that country song.
Toronto Blue Jays – Eric Church
The Blue Jays have been an offensive powerhouse this season, smashing home runs and bringing an offensive energy unlike any team in baseball. Have you seen an Eric Church concert? It’s non-stop, high energy from Eric Church that leaves your jaw on the floor. Blue Jays have also won their division this year and made the playoffs for the first time in years. Hopefully, we’ll see Eric take home some much deserved hardware at this year’s CMA Awards on November 4th.
Kansas City Royals – Dierks Bentley
The Royals have been grinding it out for 29 years without a postseason appearance until last year’s heartbreaking World Series loss. Dierks has been grinding it out for years as well, without ever really receiving that superstar status until now. The Kansas City Royals have arrived as the top of the American League and a team that everyone loves to root for. Dierks is in the same boat. He has officially arrived to the top of the country music realm and, rightfully so, has become the people’s champ of country music.
Texas Rangers – Kip Moore
The Texas Rangers finished up the season in last place in 2014. This season, they were under .500 games and 8 games back and charged back to win the division. Kip Moore has a song on his new album called ‘Come Back Kid’ and a community skatepark initiative called “Comeback Kid Skatepark Project.” Kip and the Rangers are waving the same flag this season and everyone definitely loves to root for these two comeback kids.
Houston Astros – Kelsea Ballerini
The Houston Astros are flat out fun to watch. I enjoy the way they play the game. Kelsea Ballerini is the same way. I’ve seen her perform live and I swear she’s an absolute blast of young energy on stage. Not only is she young and exciting but she’s on track for huge success. The Astros are looking like a team that will be tough to beat for years as well. I’m excited to see what the future holds for both of them.
New York Yankees – Jason Aldean
The New York Yankees have more championships then anyone in baseball could even dream about, however this year, they don’t have a chance. Jason Aldean puts on a helluva a show, but this year, I just didn’t make the effort to go see him. Aldean is definitely a country music powerhouse that can pack a stadium with the best of them, however he failed to grab a nomination for Entertainer of the Year at the CMA this year. He’s got to be the Yankees on this list.
