Blake Shelton is arguably the most recognized face in country music these days. All three of his singles from his latest album Bringing Back The Sunshine have gone number one and I’m betting he’s about to land his fourth.
Written by Luke Laired and Craig Wiseman, ‘Gonna’ is a feel-good, mid-tempo, toe-tapper that sounds like it was perfectly sculpted into the standard country radio mold. It’s fairly catchy, but overall nothing that sounds unlike anything else on the radio today. In fact, ‘Gonna’ is becoming quite a country buzzword with Chase Rice and Jason Aldean both having singles with ‘Gonna’ in the title.
Its call-and-response chorus makes it for a fun sing-a-long that is guaranteed to be stuck in your head, even though you won’t want it to be. At its core it’s much more than the average “hey girl, whatcha doin’ tonight” type song, as the lyrics reveal his intention to date and marry this girl. It’s lighthearted approach makes it come off as much more gentlemanly than a hook-up and Blake’s charming personality conveys that message perfectly.
Will it blow you away? No. Will you find yourself singing along? Definitively. Is it bound for success? Yes, because it’s Blake.
